04/11/08::: scutopus & co. track on MP3 tribute compilation
A segment of the dodgeball rave (guess which one!) that I played in collaboration with
JTS3K and The Brown Moth is a part of an MP3 compilation which pays tribute to the
co-founder and former CEO of Elektron,
Daniel Hansson. He died tragically in a car accident last year. (See news post below.) 30 MP3s are yours for $5, the entirety of which goes towards the
World Wildlife Fund, as Daniel was fond of environmental causes. There is also a batch of MP3s for download from the site which did not make the main
tribute, but are still rockin'enough to be featured on the site. Did I mention if you buy the collection with haste that you will be entered into a drawing
to win a Sidstation? They are no longer in production, so this is a very cool bonus if you are a musician. Go to 45
Tribute now!
09/06/07::: R.I.P. Daniel Hansson
I recently learned that the CEO and main visionary of the Swedish company that makes my favorite hardware synths,
Elektron, died in a car accident.
He was 33. I was initially surprised at how shaken up I am by this, but it makes sense because they were a small company who cared about their
customers and would go above and beyond to help users of their products. Plus, their synths inspired creativity and allowed one to stay away from a
computer (if one wished) to make electronic music. For all these reasons and more I've felt a personal connection with the synths--the Sidstation,
Machinedrum and Monomachine--and by extension those who made them. I'm am glad that the company will continue on, though I couldn't imagine it not
doing so for any reason.
06/20/07::: More downloads on music page
I've uploaded MP3s of my first "techno" album "Ganglion Rot" as well as MP3s of an extra-fun live set I participated in at a dodgeball rave called
"Balls to the Wall." Both sets of MP3s can be found on the music page, though neither set is normal.

Hello! It has been a while since I updated the website; a lot has shifted. Many cool things to report!
Epicene Sound has released a very limited run of my noise tape "Batiscauthen." I have a small
amount of copies. Sound sample(s) and purchase info to come. In more Epicene-related news, a 3CD compilation they released with Under Radar and
Public Guilt has an exclusive noise track by me called "Occupations of Uninhabited Space," after the mobiles made by a character in the Ursula K. LeGuin
novel "The Dispossessed." A highly recommended novel.

Also, I'm finishing up a melodic, pretty, sometimes melancholy album, and have removed from the music and remix pages the tracks that will be
included. More information to come, but to tide you over here's a very early 4-track version of one of the songs to be included on the album:::

Pascal Thiel of DisAgreement.net was kind enough to review Beats & Drones.
His review is a good description of the release,
and made me very happy! If you are interested in getting a copy, please see the item below.

I am happy to announce the release of "Beats and Drones," a compilation released by Jarrod Fowler, under his
"Distribution as Rhythm" aegis, that includes
two drones of mine and some beats (with drones!) by Durlin Lurt and Oscar P. McLure! Density is the first word I think
of when listening to this release. It also has awesome art by Liv Rodriguez, who did the art for my SPUT release!
Layers upon layers of sounds make for music you can sink in to and in which you may discover more going on than you
initially noticed. This is a limited edition, like all the "Distribution as Rhythm" releases, and costs $6.
You can get them from me or Jarrod. Email me at scutopus at gmail dot com for one!
P.S. The cool little favicon of my head was done by mi amigo Thomas! Thanks, man.

Oh, dear--it has been almost four months since my last update! My apologies. I took a brief hiatus from making music--to recharge the creative battery as it were--and have since been working on a variety of things, some of which you will hear about shortly.
I have finally capitalized the text on the site, barring "scutopus," which is as it should be even when it begins sentences.

Tomorrow, the 26th of April, is the two-year anniversary of my first field recording of a foghorn. It was this recording that compelled me to make more field recordings, and I have since made a few more forghorn recordings. Please take a listen to the fifteen minute, fifteen megabyte mp3 of the
recording I made at the bluff of Nobska lighthouse on April 26th, 2004. The wind was mostly still that night, so a foghorn from Martha's Vineyard is audible, as is a bell buoy and the surf breaking on the rip-rap. Thanks and appreciation to Nick Locasio for lending me his microphone which I used on this recording.
I have yet to create a field recording page due to the size of the MP3s and the size of the navigation bar to the right, so please contact me at scutopus at gmail dot com if you would like this and other recordings on a CD-R. A list and descriptions of each recording will be included on the coming field recordings page.

I am pleased to announce that scutopus.com will now have an RSS feed for those who dig that sort of thing. In thinking about how to notify readers of updates at my site, I had to choose between an email list and RSS. RSS won. The RSS feed will contain most, if not all, of the text found in the news items on scutopus.com itself. Enjoy!
